Key Changes To Improve Men’s Health
Prostate cancer, osteoporosis and oestrogen dominance do affect men and hormone balance is just as important for them too.
Men typically don’t look after their health as well as women do. But, health issues like prostate problems, low testosterone, and osteoporosis can be tied to hormones, and there are simple suggestions that can help.
There are some easy ways to make small, healthy life changes that will greatly affect men’s lives.
There are several main areas that can achieve that – none of them are new or special, but they can truly help if done often.
Nutrition – thankfully we know more about the risks of a bad diet that is high in bad fats, sugar, processed foods, lacking fruit and vegetables, and drinking too much alcohol or smoking.
What will truly help is changing as much as you can to a good diet like the Mediterranean one, with lots of fish, fruit, and vegetables, and less salt, sugar, and processed foods.
Activity – if you don’t use it, you lose it is not just a memorable phrase; it’s true. Getting regular exercise is very important and it doesn’t need to be at a gym.
Anything you enjoy, like golf, walking, swimming, or gardening, can all help.
Sleep – getting enough sleep is vital for good health because it affects many of our body’s other functions and makes our stress levels worse.
Often, prostate problems can make you go to the bathroom at night, which then ruins sleep, so this should also be looked at by your doctor.
Mental Health – this is a topic men don’t often want to discuss, but it impacts almost everything we do, both in the body and our emotional life.
Support is available from your Doctor, a counsellor or therapist if you need it. You can help to lower your stress by doing things like meditation, yoga, tai chi, or any kind of regular exercise that helps your body relax.
Smoking and drinking – are habits that can increase the chance of getting prostate cancer.
Some studies also suggest that smoking especially has a greater chance of being linked to earlier death. Regular smokers lose about 10 years of life expectancy on average compared to non-smokers, and roughly half of all long-term smokers die from tobacco-related illnesses.
If you are currently smoking, there is a link between a higher chance of aggressive prostate cancer and death from cancer. Stopping smoking does lower that chance and both these habits weaken the body’s defence system, and that on its own is a greater risk for many health issues.
Prostate issues and cancer – prostate issues happen often as men get older, and although women often check for signs of breast cancer, not many men do the same for prostate, even with the very many public health warnings.
It is important to do so because many cases of prostate cancer are found during regular blood tests that show a high prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level – a possible sign of prostate cancer.
The role of oestrogen in prostate cancer has been noted, the rise of ‘man boobs’ which relate to higher oestrogen levels is an indicator of this.
Although no clinical trials have been done that I am aware of, there are anecdotal patient reports of improvement by supplementing with bioidentical progesterone.
These are symptoms that need checking with a doctor:
1. Frequent urges to urinate, especially at night
2. Difficulty starting urination or holding it back
3. Weak or interrupted urinary flow
4. Painful or burning urination

7. Blood in urine or semen
8. Recurrent, persistent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips or upper thighs
Libido and function – a healthy sex life has many benefits both physical and psychological and again this can be affected by oestrogen dominance and/or low testosterone levels.
Being aware of that in the diet, plus stress and health conditions such as diabetes can certainly affect performance and desire and so regular health checks are a must.
As progesterone is a precursor for testosterone in the body it may be helpful to consider as a supplement but there are different application methods for men – see the end of the article for more information.
Osteoporosis – this is not recognised often enough in men because many wrongly believe they do not suffer from it.
When bones break they are usually treated just for that incident, but if too much oestrogen is also present it can lead to osteoporosis and bone weakness. It is wise to check this with a bone scan if it has happened more often or close to each other.
Progesterone is vital for building bones, and if there is too much oestrogen, it will make old bone last longer, making it easier to break, and also slow down the building of new, strong bone.
Too much oestrogen – the appearance of ‘man boobs’ might be funny, but it shows a real problem. Men are being affected by the amount of oestrogen in our food and by harmful oestrogens in the environment.
This is important because oestrogen is the hormone that clears away the old bone while progesterone is the hormone that builds the new bone. Accessories oestrogen can be too much old bone is being removed and if progesterone levels are insufficient to build a new bone, this is a risk for osteoporosis.
We understand that oestrogen plays a part in cancer growth, so lowering any amount of oestrogen will be useful.
One method is to choose organic meat and also to eat less meat, only 2-3 times per week, which can lower the oestrogen level.
Helpful information:
In women, hormone imbalance symptoms often improve with twice-daily use of Serenity – the progesterone only cream – to maintain a steady hormone level in the body.
However, for men, using it is different, and it is best to apply it to the following areas in turn: back of the neck, inside of the thighs, inside of the upper and lower arms, stomach, and the palms of the hands. It is best to use this routine five times each month and then take a five or six day break.
This provides 5 areas for a different spot each day, and the cream only needs to be applied once a day.
